Disagreeing with a Peer About One Line

Today's task: In twenty minutes with a peer, disagree about one line on a shared page — and get it changed without making it about her.

The Setup

Where

A twenty-minute video call on a Thursday afternoon. Hedda is at her kitchen table in Oslo, with a backpack behind her chair. Her signup page for your joint workshop has been live since yesterday morning. The workshop is next Tuesday.

Who

You are Sam, and you build Echonote on your own — it turns long voice notes into clean notes. Hedda is a solo developer; she builds Vela, which turns notes into short client emails, and she made the signup page. You are peers: nobody pays anybody, and either of you can walk away.

At stake

Her page calls Echonote the best partner for Vela, and it went to her eighteen thousand readers. Two of your own users already wrote in to ask whether Echonote works without Vela. Hedda leaves tomorrow morning and is offline for a week; Tuesday is the only date you both have.

Mood

She is warm and quick. She asks whether she got something wrong before you say anything, and she does not defend herself once she hears it. Nothing is angry here. The problem is small and quiet, and it still has to be said out loud.

Scene Hint

Dialogue

  1. Hedda

Hi Sam, good to see you. I read your message about the signup page. Did I get something wrong?

  2. You

Nothing is broken. But before we talk about Tuesday, I want to clear the air: I am not calling to say you did something bad. One line on the page is doing something you did not plan.

  3. Hedda

Okay, now I am a little worried. Which line?

  4. You

The third paragraph. It says Echonote is the best partner for Vela. I know you meant it as a compliment. But on the reader's side, it can come across as if Echonote is a part of Vela. Two of them emailed me about it this morning.

  5. Hedda

Oh. That is not what I meant at all. I wanted people to see both tools, side by side. I can change it tonight.

  6. You

Thank you. And I still want to do the workshop — that has not changed. So can we stick to the line from our first plan? It said: two tools, one workflow. That line was true for both of us.

  7. Hedda

Sure. But can I ask — does it really matter? My people know you build your own thing.

  8. You

For the people who already know me, no. But the page is the first thing new readers see, and the words stay in their head. So yes, I do want to push back on this one, and only this one.

  9. Hedda

Okay. That is fair. Do you want to write the new line, or should I?

  10. You

You write it — you know the page. But let us put it in writing here, in the call notes, so we both remember what we agreed on. And one small thing for next time: a short heads-up before new words go out would help me a lot.

  11. Hedda

That is very fair, and I am sorry. I did not think about how it would read on your side. I will send you the new line in one hour, before I start packing.

  12. You

Thank you. Send it over, and I will answer with a yes or one small change. Then we are clear before Tuesday.

clear the air /ˌklɪr ði ˈer/

Before we look at the schedule, let us clear the air about last week — I do not want that sitting in the room."(看排期之前,先把上周那件事说开——我不想让它一直悬在那儿。)

come across as /kʌm əˈkrɔs æz/

同一个事实,用 come across as 说出来是陈述观感,用 you wrote it wrong 说出来就是指责。

重音落在 across 上(come a-CROSS as)。

Your reply was honest, but on a first email it can come across as cold."(你的回复很实在,但放在第一封邮件里,读起来会显得冷。)

stick to /ˈstɪk tuː/

后面直接接名词(the line / the plan / the price),不接从句。注意和 stick with(继续用某个方案)区分:stick to 是别偏离,stick with 是别放弃。

We have ten minutes. Let us stick to the two questions on the agenda and take the rest by email."(我们只有十分钟,就守住日程上的两个问题,剩下的邮件说。)

push back 复习 /ˈpʊʃ bæk/

常配 on:push back on one thing。 That got some pushback.

The vendor wanted the whole fee up front. I pushed back and asked for two payments."(供应商想一次收全款,我提了不同意见,改成两笔付。)

put it in writing 复习 /ˌpʊt ɪt ɪn ˈraɪtɪŋ/

in writing 是固定搭配,介词用 in,不加 the。同族说法:get it in writing(把文字拿到手)。

Everything we agreed on today goes in one email tonight. I always put it in writing after a call."(今天说定的都在今晚一封邮件里。

I know you meant it as ___ , but it comes across as ___ .
Can we stick to ___ ?
Let us put it in writing so we both remember what we agreed on.

My Turn

Situation: Same call, two minutes later. Hedda has agreed to change the line. Then she adds one more thing she wants to put on the same page: a free Vela seat for your readers.

They say: "One more thing — can I add a free Vela seat for your readers, right under the new line? It makes the pairing feel real."

Your turn: Say yes to the gift, then say where it goes and who says it — and keep the new top line at two separate tools. Two or three sentences.
