Pitching Yourself as a Podcast Guest
Today's task: In fifteen minutes, give Freya one clear reason to put you on her show — and make it easy for her to say no without losing the door.
The Setup
Where
A fifteen-minute video call on a Monday afternoon. Freya is in her studio between two recordings: a white wall behind her, headphones on a stand, and a small timer on the desk turned toward the camera.
Who
You are Sam, and you build Echonote on your own — it turns long voice notes into clean notes. Freya hosts a podcast for people who build software alone. You wrote to her two weeks ago; this call is a first hello, not the interview. You have never met her.
At stake
Her season is almost full — November is booked, and she gets about ten guest pitches a week. You want one slot, but the bigger risk is being read as one more person who only wants to show off an app.
Mood
She is friendly and quick. She names the time limit in her first sentence, checks the clock while you talk, and answers with we will see instead of yes. Nothing cold — just very practiced.
Scene Hint
Dialogue

Freya
Thanks for making the time. I have fifteen minutes before my next recording, so I will start with the easy question. Who are you, and why this show?
-
You
So, the short version: I am Sam, and I build Echonote on my own. It turns voice notes into clean notes. I am not here to talk about the app. I am here because your listeners all work alone, and so do I.
-
Freya
Good start. Most people send me a product page in the first email. But I have to be honest with you: I get about ten pitches a week, and my season is nearly full. What would the episode actually be?
-
You
I am not asking for a product slot. I am asking for one episode. Here is what I can bring to the table: eighteen months working alone, one paid tier, and a story with real numbers in it.
-
Freya
Eighteen months alone. That is not nothing. But the AI angle is everywhere this year. Every second pitch is a solo developer with an AI tool. Why would yours be different?
-
You
Fair, and point taken. The tool is not the story, and I would not put it in the title. The story is the boring part: my first refund request, a price change, and a support email at two in the morning. That is forty minutes I can talk about without slides.
-
Freya
Now that is a better answer. Two things, though. November is already booked, so the earliest I could give you is December. And if we do this, I want the real numbers on the show — refunds, churn, monthly income. Are you ready to say those out loud?
-
You
December is fine, and yes to the numbers — the real ones, not the good ones. Would it help if I sent you a two-paragraph outline before you decide? That keeps this worth your time, and if the outline is boring, we stop there.
-
Freya
Two paragraphs. That I can read on the train. Same address as before?
-
You
Same address, yes. And you do not have to answer today. You can check with your producer on the season plan first — I know the calendar is not only your call.
-
Freya
That is true, and thank you for saying it. My producer builds the calendar, and she turns down most of these. Send the outline by Thursday, and I will read it before our Friday meeting. One more thing — if we do this, no selling on the show. Not once.
-
You
Understood — no selling, and no link at the end. I will send the two paragraphs on Thursday morning. If it is not a fit, tell me and I will leave it there. If it is, we can talk about the December date.
the short version /ðə ʃɔːrt ˈvɜːrʒən/
日常里也常听到 give me the short version(说重点)。
Do not forward the whole report. Give the client the short version — three sentences, no tables."(别把整份报告转过去,给客户短版就行——三句话,不要表格。)
bring to the table /brɪŋ tə ðə ˈteɪbl/
We do not need another idea. We need someone who can bring to the table a team and a budget."(我们不缺点子,缺的是一个能带上团队和预算的人。)
worth your time /ˈwɜːrθ jʊr ˈtaɪm/
它常和 make 搭配:make this worth your time。
I put the numbers in the first line, so the email is worth your time even if you read nothing else."(我把数字放在第一行,所以就算你别的都不看,这封邮件也值你花这点时间。)
point taken 复习 /pɔɪnt ˈteɪkən/
所以它天生是半个句子,后面常常跟着 and 或 but:point taken, but…
Point taken on the timing — next time I will send the file a day early."(时间这块你说得对,下次我提前一天把文件发出来。)
check with 复习 /tʃek wɪð/
记忆提示:(联想)check 是核对,with 后面跟「那个人」:check with your producer、check with finance。
Before you promise a discount, check with the finance team — they set the numbers."(答应折扣之前先跟财务确认一下,数字是他们定的。)
My Turn
Situation: Same call, one minute later. This time Freya does not check with anyone. She says yes on the spot, and puts a date on it in the same sentence.
They say: "All right, let us do it. I can record on the twelfth of December. What do you need from me?"
Your turn: Close it in two or three sentences. Confirm the date, say what you will send and when, and hold the one line you already agreed on — no selling on the show.
