Today's task: In fifteen minutes with a paying user who is cutting back, find out what really happened — without selling him anything.

The Setup

Where

A fifteen-minute video call on a Friday afternoon. Tomas is in the meeting room of his small studio in Prague, and someone behind him is carrying cardboard boxes past the open door. He has to leave in ten minutes.

Who

You are Sam, and you build Echonote on your own — it turns long recordings into clean notes. Tomas is a partner at a six-person design studio in Prague. He has paid for two seats for ten months. You are the one who called him, not the other way around.

At stake

He wrote yesterday to say the studio is going down to one seat next month. In your export numbers, one thing looks wrong: about forty a week six weeks ago, two a week now. And you do not know that two of his team tried three uploads, got nothing back, and never mentioned it. The month closes next week.

Mood

He is polite and short. He says the studio is just busy, does not complain, and does not ask you any questions. He keeps glancing at the door. There is no anger on this call — only good manners.

Scene Hint

Dialogue

  1. Tomas

Thanks for setting this up, Sam. I saw your email about next month — one seat instead of two.

  2. You

I did. And I do not want to put you on the spot here. I am not calling to talk you out of anything. I just want to know what happened. This should have worked well for a studio your size.

  3. Tomas

It is fine, really. We are just busy. Two people moved to other projects, and honestly we may not use it enough to keep two seats.

  4. You

That makes sense. Can I ask about the last six weeks? Your exports went from about forty a week down to two. Did everyone slow down, or just those two?

  5. Tomas

Mostly everyone, I think. Wait — forty to two? That is a big drop. I did not know it was that low.

  6. You

That is the part that does not add up for me. Two of your team also uploaded recordings that never turned into notes. Three uploads, no notes, no error message. Did anyone tell you about that?

  7. Tomas

No. Nobody told me. I think they thought they did something wrong, so they just stopped. Honestly, I did not want to bring it up either. It feels silly to say it does not work when you cannot explain why.

  8. You

It is not silly, and it is not your team's mistake. Three uploads went nowhere, and nobody followed up. That is exactly how things fall through the cracks. That part is on my side of the line — I am the one who should have caught it.

  9. Tomas

You do not have to do that. It is the end of the month, and I do not want to take up your time with our problem.

  10. You

It is not your problem. A file went in and no note came out — that is mine. Give me until Monday, and I will look into it before you decide anything. If those three uploads work after that, keep two seats for two weeks and see how it feels.

  11. Tomas

All right. That is more than fair. So I stay as we are for now, and you write to me on Monday?

  12. You

Yes. And if it still feels heavy after two weeks, that is your call. I would rather you leave with a clear answer than keep two seats to be polite.

put you on the spot /ˌpʊt ju ɑːn ðə ˈspɑːt/

它常配 not want to / do not mean to:I do not want to put you on the spot. 同族说法:put me on the spot(让我为难)。

I do not want to put you on the spot, but I need a name before Friday."(我不想让你当场为难,但周五之前我需要一个名字。)

not add up /ˌdʌznt ˈæd ˈʌp/

主语通常是 it / that / the numbers,几乎不用人。注意它和 do not match 的区别:not add up 说的是「解释不通」,do not match 只说明两样东西不一样。

The invoice says six boxes, but the delivery note says eight. That does not add up."(发票上写六箱,送货单上写八箱,这两处对不上。)

fall through the cracks /ˌfɔːl θruː ðə ˈkræks/

常用搭配:something fell through the cracks。

Two support tickets fell through the cracks when we changed tools last month."(上个月换工具的时候,两张客服工单漏掉了。)

look into it 复习 /ˈlʊk ˈɪntu ɪt/

后面常接 and get back to you / before you decide。

I will look into it and send you the corrected file tomorrow."(我去查一下,明天把更正后的文件发你。)

your call 复习 /jɔːr ˈkɔːl/

We can start in March or in June. Your call — both work on our side."(三月或六月开始都行。

I am not calling to ___ .
That is the part that does not add up for me.
I would rather ___ than ___ . 我宁愿___,也不愿意___。

My Turn

Situation: Same call, five minutes later. Tomas tells you the rest. The three uploads did work once — his team fixed them by hand. What stopped them was not the bug. Cleaning up each note by hand took longer than writing it from scratch, and he did not want to say that to your face.

They say: "So it is not the bug, Sam. Even when it works, one of them spends twenty minutes cleaning up every note. I did not want to say that to your face."

Your turn: Ask for the one thing you still need, say what you cannot promise, and hand the decision back. Two or three sentences.
