Asking a Fellow Creator for Credit

Today's task: In ten minutes with a fellow creator who used your video, ask for one thing — and do not let the call turn into a complaint.

The Setup

Where

A ten-minute video call on Thursday morning. It is evening where Rui is, in his apartment in São Paulo. A lamp is on behind him, a stack of printed pages sits on his keyboard, and a second screen shows the comment section under one of his videos. He cleared his evening for this call.

Who

You are Sam, and you build Echonote on your own — a note app, and you also make videos about building it. Rui runs a tech channel in Portuguese with about forty-eight thousand subscribers. You have never talked before. He wrote to you yesterday to ask about doing a review of your app.

At stake

His video about your app brings you more new users than anything else right now, and the description does not name your channel. His comments are full of people asking where the full video is. He also has the thing you want next month: a review on his channel.

Mood

He is warm and talks fast. In the first minute he says twice how much he likes your videos. He brings up his own video before you do — and offers to take it down before you have asked for anything.

Scene Hint

Dialogue

  1. Rui

Sam! Finally. Sorry about the time — I know it is early for you. I have been watching your channel for almost a year, so this is a small fan moment for me.

    Sam!

  2. You

Thanks, Rui. I want to be up front about why I asked for this call, before we get to the review. Your video about my app is doing really well, and there is one line in it I need to talk about.

  3. Rui

Oh. About the video. I knew it. I can take it down right now if you want. I did not mean to do anything wrong.

  4. You

I hope you do not take it the wrong way — I am not asking you to take anything down. The video itself is good work. The problem is one line in the description, and it is a small thing.

  5. Rui

Okay. Okay, good. So which line? I wrote that it was based on a video from a small developer. I did not put your channel name because I was not sure you wanted the attention.

  6. You

That is the one. People in your comments are asking where the full video is, and right now the description does not give credit to the channel it came from. Two ways to fix it: one line in the description, or a pinned comment at the top.

  7. Rui

I can do either one. But if I put a link there, will the platform think my video is not original? I built this channel from nothing, and the money is real.

  8. You

That is a fair worry, and it is not what I am asking for. Your dub, your editing — that is your work, and I am not asking you to change any of it. If you want something stronger than a line of text, just say the word and I will send you the original clips and the subtitle file.

  9. Rui

You would send me the clips? Then maybe I should redo the opening with your real footage. That would be more honest anyway.

  10. You

I would rather you did not rebuild the whole video. One line in the description can point people to the full video, and that is enough for me. Save the rest of your energy for the review you wanted to shoot.

  11. Rui

Deal. So what do I write? Your channel name is in English — if I type it from memory, I will get it wrong.

  12. You

I will send you the exact spelling, the link, and the clips today. Do not spend more than five minutes on it. And for the review, I will have a screen recording ready for you by Monday.

give credit /ɡɪv ˈkrɛdɪt/

它后面常接 to:give credit to the original creator。

The slides are fine, but please give credit to the two interns who built the data set."(幻灯片没问题,但请注明数据集是那两个实习生做的。)

take it the wrong way /teɪk ɪt ðə rɔŋ weɪ/

几乎总配 do not:I hope you do not take it the wrong way. 注意主语是听的人:是对方 take it,不是你 take it。

Do not take this the wrong way, but the client read your last email as a promise."(别误会,但客户把你上一封邮件当成了承诺。)

point people to /pɔɪnt ˈpipəl tu/

主语可以是人,也可以是东西:a line points people to the video。

One line at the end of the article can point people to the full interview."(在文末放一行字,就能把读者引到完整访谈。)

up front 复习 /ˌʌp ˈfrʌnt/

常用搭配:be up front about something。

I want to be up front: the first three months of this role are mostly night shifts."(我先把话说在前面:这个岗位前三个月基本是夜班。)

say the word 复习 /seɪ ðə wɜrd/

它常单独成句:Just say the word. 语气比 tell me 轻,比 let me know 更主动:let me know 是等你回话,say the word 是我已经准备好了。

If you need the print-ready files, just say the word."(如果你要印刷用的文件,说一声就行。)

I am not asking you to ___ — I am asking you to ___ .
Two ways to fix it: ___ , or ___ .
I would rather you did not ___ .

My Turn

Situation: Same call, a few minutes later. Rui will write your channel name. But he wants to leave the link out, and he is quite sure about his own audience.

They say: "I will put your channel name in the description, Sam. But no link. My viewers never click links — it just makes the description look messy."

Your turn: Ask for the link without arguing about his viewers. You have one thing you can point to. Two or three sentences.
