Today's task: In a twenty-minute call with the illustrator who has been waiting on you for three weeks, give her a decision — not another maybe.
The Setup
Where
A twenty-minute video call on a Tuesday afternoon. You are at your kitchen table, with your own coffee going cold. She is at her desk in Lisbon, and it is morning there. Two printed drawings sit on her desk under a sticky note with one word on it: Monday. A message from another client is open on her second screen.
Who
You are Sam, and you build Echonote alone. Marta is a freelance illustrator in Lisbon. She drew the first version of your launch page a year ago, and you have worked with her twice since. Three months ago you hired her for twelve new drawings.
At stake
She turned down another job to keep this week open. Another client is waiting to hear about next week. You paid a third of the fee up front. Your launch has eaten the last three weeks, and you still have not opened the twelve drawings she sent you.
Mood
She is calm and direct. She does not raise her voice, and she does not ask you for an apology. She says the same thing twice: she needs an answer today. She keeps the drawings on her desk while she talks.
