Asking Before You Quote Her in Public
Today's task: Ask Marisol for a yes, tell her exactly where her sentence would sit and when it would go up, and make it easy for her to say no.
The Setup
Where
A short video call on a Tuesday afternoon. You have the new page open on one screen: right after the first paragraph there is an empty gray line where her sentence would sit. She is at her desk in Valencia with her lunch next to the keyboard.
Who
You are the only developer of Sift, a small tool that turns one hour of voice notes into a first draft. Marisol is a designer at a small studio in Valencia and one of your first users. She said the sentence on a call two weeks ago, and it went straight into your notes.
At stake
The new page goes up on Thursday morning. Out of forty lines, hers is the only one that names a real result; the rest say things like easy to use. She also flies out on Friday for two weeks. And she did not say that sentence for you to publish it.
Mood
Warm and quick. She laughs on her first line, and she answers your question with a question about where her words would go. She is organized, not suspicious.
Scene Hint
Dialogue

Marisol
Hi! Two weeks now, and I still owe you the notes from our second call. Is that why you are calling me?
-
You
No, that is not why I am calling. You said something on that call, and I would like to use it on the new page. It is a small ask, but I am not going to use your words without asking you first.
-
Marisol
Oh. Which sentence? I say a lot of things on those calls.
-
You
You said the tool gives you back almost one full workday every week. It is the best line I have. Before you answer, I want to be up front about two things.
-
Marisol
All right, go ahead. Where would it go?
-
You
On the new page, right under your name — first name only. And it will not go live until you read the full sentence and the page it will sit on.
-
Marisol
You would send it to me first? Nobody does that. Everyone takes the quote and says thank you after.
-
You
That is the plan. And here is the important one. Sift is not your tool alone — your studio pays for it too. So please check with them before you say yes; I do not want a strange conversation to land on you. Also, the page goes up on Thursday morning and you fly on Friday. So a yes or a no by Wednesday night is all I need. If I do not hear from you, the sentence comes out.
-
Marisol
That is more careful than my own lawyer. Fine — my first name is okay. The number is not. I cannot stand in front of eight people and say I got a workday back. That is not what happened.
-
You
Then the number is out. First name only, no number, no studio name, and you read it before it goes up — that is your call, all of it.
-
Marisol
Good. And in a month, if I get nervous about it?
-
You
Then just say the word and it comes down — the same day, and you do not have to give me a reason. I will send you one short message with the exact sentence, where it will sit, and the date it comes down if you ever ask. You reply yes or no, and on Thursday the page goes up with or without it.
check with /tʃek wɪð/
用法上后面接人(check with your manager / check with the studio),不要接事情。
Please check with the client before you book the venue — I do not want to lose the deposit."(订场地之前先跟客户确认一下,我不想白赔定金。)
up front 复习 /ˌʌp ˈfrʌnt/
I want to be up front about + 名词(two things / the fee / the timeline)。
I want to be up front about the deadline: the first draft is due on Friday, not next week."(交期我提前说明:初稿周五就要,不是下周。)
go live /ˌɡoʊ ˈlaɪv/
nothing goes live until you see it
它的反义动作是 take it down(撤下来),两个说法常常成对出现:goes live / comes down。
The new prices go live on the first of the month, so tell your team before then."(新价格一号上线,在那之前先跟你的团队说好。)
say the word /ˌseɪ ðə ˈwɜːrd/
常见搭配:just say the word and I will + 动作。
If the noise is still bad tonight, just say the word and I will move you to another room."(今晚要是还吵,你说一声我就给你换房。)
your call 复习 /jʊr ˈkɔːl/
(The wording is your call),否则听起来像把整件事都推回去,容易变成"我不想负责"。想表达"全部都由你定",换成 that is up to you 更自然。
Two nights or three — your call. The rate is the same either way."(住两晚还是三晚你定,价钱一样。)
My Turn
Situation: Same call, one minute later. One thing is different: the sentence you wrote down is not the one she wants you to use. She has a new one, written this morning, and she is happy for you to use her full name and the studio name on it too.
They say: "Forget the old sentence — I wrote a shorter one this morning. And use my full name. Put the studio name in too. They will not mind."
Your turn: Take the new sentence, and say what you will do before her full name goes on the page.
