Today's task: Tell Diego that the translation retainer ends this month, answer his two real questions straight, and leave him with facts instead of hope.

The Setup

Where

A twenty-minute video call on Thursday morning your time. Diego is in Buenos Aires, where it is Wednesday evening, and the small lamp on his desk is already on. On his right there is an old notebook, open in the middle: two columns of terms, English on one side and Spanish on the other.

Who

You run a small channel and a weekly newsletter about AI tools. Diego has translated the Spanish edition on a monthly retainer for five months, and he built the term list himself. You have never met in person.

At stake

The newsletter moves from weekly to monthly in November, so a monthly retainer no longer makes sense. Diego wrote to you yesterday to say he is holding his Tuesdays for your next three months — that is how he plans his month. And you are the one ending this, not him.

Mood

Short sentences, no small talk. He read your message and asked for a call the same day. He takes notes while you talk, thanks you for telling him on a call instead of by email, and asks you directly whether the problem is the work.

Scene Hint

Dialogue

  1. Diego

Hi. Your message was short, so I asked for a call. Is everything all right?

  2. You

Thanks for making time today. I have to give notice on the translation retainer — the last day would be the end of the month. I wanted to give you as much notice as I can.

  3. Diego

Okay. Thank you for telling me on a call and not in an email. Can I ask the first question — is it the work?

  4. You

It is not the work. The term list you built is why the Spanish edition reads the way it does. The change is on my side: the newsletter goes from weekly to monthly in November, so there is not enough in it for a monthly retainer.

  5. Diego

I see. That is bad news, but I understand it. Should I keep my Tuesdays free for the next three months, just in case?

  6. You

No. Hold off on blocking those days for me. I do not know when the monthly edition comes back, or if it comes back at all. Do not turn down other work for me.

  7. Diego

That is the part I needed to hear. So where does that leave what we have open right now?

  8. You

Let us wrap up the two drafts you already have. Send them when they are ready, and send your final invoice for the full month. I will pay it the same week it arrives.

  9. Diego

Good. And the term list, the style notes, the two templates — do you want those back, or should I keep them?

  10. You

Keep them. In the meantime, nothing changes for you: same days, same files, same rate, right up to the last day.

  11. Diego

All right. Then I will send the drafts on Monday and close my side of it clean.

  12. You

Thank you. I do not want us to part ways with you guessing why. If the Spanish edition ever grows again, I will tell you — but I am not promising you work. What I can do is real: a short note about your work this week, if you want one for your page.

give notice /ɡɪv ˈnoʊtɪs/

注意它通常是固定搭配,中间不加 a(加了容易被听成“发了一份布告”)。

If you want to move out in June, you have to give notice by the first of May."(想六月搬走的话,你得在五月一号之前通知房东。)

wrap up /ˌræp ˈʌp/

常见搭配:wrap up a call / wrap up the meeting / wrap up the last batch。

Let us wrap up the meeting with the two decisions we made today."(我们就把今天这两个决定定下来,会就收到这儿。)

part ways /ˈpɑːrt weɪz/

The two founders parted ways last year, but they still send each other clients."(两位创始人去年分开了,但现在还会互相介绍客户。)

hold off on 复习 /ˌhoʊld ˈɔːf ɑːn/

所以后面一定要接东西(hold off on the order / on blocking those days),不能单独说 hold off。

Hold off on ordering the parts until the client confirms the size."(客户确认尺寸之前,先别订零件。)

in the meantime 复习 /ˌɪn ðə ˈmiːn.taɪm/

The new laptop arrives on Friday. In the meantime, use mine."(新电脑周五到,在那之前先用我的。)

I have to ___, and I wanted to give you as much notice as I can.
Hold off on ___. I do not know when, or if, ___. 先别___。
Let us wrap up ___. Send ___, and send your final invoice.

My Turn

Situation: Same call, same reason, ten minutes later. One thing is different: Diego makes an offer.

They say: "I can do it for half my rate. Half is fine. I would rather keep working with you."

Your turn: Say no to the discount and say why, then tell him what you can still give him.
