Negotiating a Sponsorship Deal
Today's task: In a first call with an overseas sponsor, agree on the money, the sixty-second mention and who keeps the final words — in English.
The Setup
Where
Tuesday morning, in your small home studio. Your camera is off, only the call is on. Your next AI tools video is planned for two weeks from now.
Who
You run a small AI tools channel with Chinese and English viewers. Daniel is a marketing lead at an overseas AI startup. You used their tool once in a video three months ago.
At stake
Daniel offers two thousand US dollars for one video. But his team also wants to read your script before you publish it. Your viewers trust you because you say what you really think.
Mood
Friendly and direct. Daniel is open about what he wants, and the money is real. His first question is about your audience, so he has read your channel page.
Scene Hint
Dialogue

Daniel
Hi, good to finally talk to you. I've watched your channel for a few months. We just launched a new AI writing tool, and we would like to sponsor one video.
-
You
Thanks, good to hear. Before I say yes, I want to make sure this is a good fit for my viewers. What do you have in mind?
-
Daniel
Of course. Two thousand US dollars. In exchange for that, we get a sixty-second part in the video, and our logo in the first minute.
-
You
That part works for me. Let me be up front with you about one thing, though — my viewers come to me for my real opinion. I can't say a tool is great if I don't think it is.
-
Daniel
I understand. That's why I picked your channel, not a big one. But our team would like to read your script before you publish it — just to check the facts.
-
You
A fact check is fine. But I have to push back on one thing: if you can change my words, then it's not my video any more.
-
Daniel
Fair enough. What do you suggest?
-
You
Here's an idea. I send you the sixty-second part only. You check the facts and the numbers, and I keep the final words.
-
Daniel
That works for us. One more thing — could you say our tool is the best one you have tried this year? That would really help.
-
You
I can't say that if I don't believe it. But I can tell my viewers what I really think after three weeks of using it — the good parts and the weak parts. That is more useful for you anyway.
-
Daniel
You're right. Let's do it your way.
-
You
Great. I'll send you a short plan this week — the date, the sixty-second part, and the payment terms. Keep me posted if anything changes on your side.
a good fit /ə ɡʊd ˈfɪt/
Thanks for the intro — before we meet, can you tell me if this project is a good fit for my design skills?"(谢谢介绍——见面之前,你能告诉我这个项目跟我的设计能力合不合吗?——换成自由职业接单场景,判断对象从"视频和观众"换成"项目和个人技能"。)
up front /ˌʌp ˈfrʌnt/
注意是 be up front about,不是 be honest(后者听起来像在指责对方不诚实)。
Let me be up front with you.
I'll be up front with you — I can finish the site in three weeks, not two."(我跟你说实话——这个网站我要三周,不是两周。
push back /pʊʃ ˈbæk/
用 push back on 比说 I don't agree 更专业,听起来是理性分歧,不是情绪对抗。
后面固定接 on:push back on a clause。
The client wants it by Friday, but I'm going to push back on the deadline — two days is not enough for testing."(客户要周五交,但截止时间我要顶一下——两天不够测。
in exchange for /ɪn ɪksˈtʃeɪndʒ fər/
记忆提示:exchange 是交换,后面直接跟换到的东西:in exchange for the money / for a mention。
We can give you the tool for free in exchange for a written review on your blog."(我们可以免费给你用这个工具,换一篇你博客上的文字评测。
keep me posted /ˌkiːp mi ˈpoʊstɪd/
Keep me posted on when the new laptop arrives — I'll fly out as soon as it lands in the office."(新电脑到了就告诉我一声——一到办公室我就飞过去。
My Turn
Situation: The video is almost ready. Two days before you publish, Daniel sends a message: his manager now wants to check the whole video, not only the sixty-second part. You already told him the final words stay with you.
They say: "Sorry, my manager wants to see the full video before you publish. It's just one email, right?"
Your turn: Reply to Daniel. Say your limit clearly, and offer one thing you can do so the deal still works. Say it out loud first. (You can start with: "Thanks, Daniel — I need to be up front —")
