Her First Result in Ten Minutes

Today's task: In ten minutes, get Mira to click through her first run on her own — and walk away knowing she can do it without you.

The Setup

Where

A ten-minute video call on a Tuesday morning. She is sharing her screen and you are watching her cursor move across it. The radio in her kitchen is still on, and she turns it down with one hand while she talks.

Who

You are the only developer of Sumly, a small tool that turns a long recording into a short list of key points. Mira is a podcast producer in Portland with no technical background — she runs the show and edits it herself.

At stake

Her free trial ends in five days. Last week she tried it alone, got a red warning, and closed the window. If today ends the same way, she goes back to writing her show notes by hand and never opens it again.

Mood

Quick and careful. She laughs before every click, says sorry before every question, and keeps checking the clock in the corner of her screen.

Scene Hint

Dialogue

  1. Mira

Okay, my screen is shared. Before we start — I am really bad with computers, so please talk slowly. Last week I got a red box and I closed the window.

  2. You

Thanks for giving it another go. Let me walk you through the whole thing. It is four clicks, and I will stay with you until you see the list on your screen.

  3. Mira

Four clicks. Okay. Where do I start? Please, not settings. Settings is where I got lost.

  4. You

No settings today. Start with the blue button in the middle of the page. You cannot break anything in here, so click it and see what happens.

  5. Mira

Okay. I clicked it. Now it says choose a file. Oh no. I need to find last week's recording. Give me a second, it is somewhere in my phone.

  6. You

Take your time. Put the file in the grey box. Then you should see a small clock next to the file name — that means it is working.

  7. Mira

There is a clock. Okay, it is turning around. Is it supposed to take this long? There are also tabs on the left side. What are those?

  8. You

Two minutes, sometimes three. Do not worry about the tabs on the left — those are for later. Right now, just watch the clock.

  9. Mira

Okay. Oh — it just finished. There are five points. Wait, that is my interview, and the names are spelled right. How did it do that?

  10. You

That is your first one. Now, last week you ran into a red box. Do you remember what you clicked right before that?

  11. Mira

I think I clicked team two times. I do not have a team. It asked for email addresses and I did not know what to put there.

  12. You

That is my mistake, not yours. That page should not be there for one person. I will take it out tonight and email you when it is gone. You know your four clicks now, so try one more episode this week without me.

walk you through 复习 /wɔːk jə ˈθruː/

后面常直接跟名词:walk you through it / walk you through the steps。别和 walk in on(推门撞见)弄混。

On your first day, I will walk you through the morning routine, so you are not guessing."(你第一天上班,我带你走一遍早上的流程,你就不会靠猜。)

you cannot break anything /juː kænt breɪk ˈeniˌθɪŋ/

I have to be careful with this one。

Try the mixer at any speed you like. You cannot break it — it stops by itself."(搅拌机想用哪档都行。

you should see /juː ʃʊd ˈsiː/

If you do not see it, tell me。

When the bread is done, you should see it pull away from the sides of the pan."(面包烤好的时候,你应该能看到它从烤盘边上松开。)

do not worry about /doʊnt ˈwɜːri əˈbaʊt/

记忆提示:(联想)worry about 后面直接接名词或动名词:about the tabs / about paying。

Do not worry about the old furniture. The movers will take it out for you."(旧家具你不用操心,搬家师傅会帮你抬出去。)

run into 复习 /rʌn ˈɪntuː/

所以它后面能接 problem、trouble、delay,也能接 an old friend。

We ran into a delay at the airport, so we missed the first meeting."(我们在机场碰上了延误,所以错过了第一场会。)

Let me walk you through it. It is ___ clicks, and I will stay with you until ___.
You should see ___. If you do not, tell me.
Do not worry about ___ — that is for later.

My Turn

Situation: Mira's second call, three days later. One thing is different: her screen share will not start today, so you can only hear her. She has the page open and she is clicking.

They say: "I clicked the blue button and I think a clock appeared, but I am not sure. What am I supposed to see now?"

Your turn: Say what she should see on her screen, then tell her what to do if she does not see it.
