Asking a Long-Time User What Breaks Her Day
Today's task: Interview a friendly user for twenty minutes, and turn polite answers like fine into one specific problem you can build for.
The Setup
Where
A video call you booked with one of your users. It is evening on her side, and the call is only twenty minutes long — she has a client project due tonight. A small red dot in the corner of your screen tells you the call is being recorded.
Who
You are the only person building the tool, and you also make videos about it on your own. Dana runs a small design studio with three people and uses your tool every day. She has been a user for nine months and often tests your new versions for free.
At stake
The next version has two months of work left, and one big feature is all that fits. You believe her team wants a sharing feature, but you have never heard a real user describe a normal work day. If this call stays polite, you will spend two months building the wrong thing.
Mood
Warm and easy. She laughs a lot, calls the tool fine, and answers in short, general sentences. The call timer on your screen is running the whole time.
Scene Hint
Dialogue
-
You
Thanks for making time, Dana. I know it is late on your side. I have wanted to pick your brain for a while. I am not selling anything today — I just want to hear how the tool fits into your work.
-
Dana
Happy to help. I use it every day, so I have a lot to say.
-
You
That is why I asked you and not a new user. So, first question: which part of your day does the tool touch the most?
-
Dana
The export, probably. Everything we make ends up in a client file, so I live in that screen.
-
You
Good. Can you tell me about the last time the export gave you trouble? Take me back to that day.
-
Dana
That was Thursday. I had four files from a client, and two of them came out the wrong size. I had to redo them one by one.
-
You
That is the part I wanted to hear. When you run into that, how often is it — once a month, or most weeks?
-
Dana
Most weeks, I think. Most days it is not a big deal. But on a deadline day it really hurts.
-
You
So on a deadline day it hurts. Now tell me step by step what you do when it goes wrong. Start from the moment you see the wrong size.
-
Dana
First I check the original file. Then I open the export settings and try a different preset. If that does not work, I rebuild the file by hand. It takes about twenty minutes each time.
-
You
Twenty minutes, and you would rather rebuild it than wait for me. That is painful to hear, but it is useful. One last question: if you had to pick one thing I fix first, what would it be?
-
Dana
The size thing. Everything else I can live with. Oh, and let me know when you fix it — I will test it for you.
pick your brain /pɪk jər breɪn/
You have shipped six courses already. Can I pick your brain about pricing for fifteen minutes next week?"(你已经上线过六门课了。
the last time /ðə læst taɪm/
常搭:the last time it happened / the last time we talked。
The last time we talked, you said the export was slow. Is that still happening?"(上次我们聊的时候,你说导出很慢。
run into /rʌn ˈɪntuː/
常搭:run into a problem / run into issues / run into each other。
Every new teammate runs into the same setup screen, so we recorded a short video for it."(每个新同事都会卡在同一个设置页,所以我们录了一段短视频。
step by step /step baɪ step/
可以放句尾(explain it step by step),也可以当开场(step by step, here is what I do)。别和 one by one 混:one by one 说的是多件事依次处理,step by step 说的是一个过程里的每一步。
Send the handover as a checklist, step by step, so the client can follow it without calling us."(把交接写成清单,一步一步来,这样客户照着做就不用打电话问我们。
if you had to pick one /ɪf ju hæd tə pɪk wʌn/
时态是 had to(虚拟),不是 have to;说的时候重心落在 pick one。后面可以直接接名词:pick one feature / pick one thing to fix first。
We can only redo one scene this week. If you had to pick one, which shot would help the video most?"(这周只能重做一场。
My Turn
Situation: Same call, twenty minutes in. Dana has just described three problems — the export size, slow search, and no sharing for her team of three. You have two months left and room for one big feature.
They say: "Honestly, they all matter to me. Can you really not do all three?"
Your turn: Ask her to rank the three with one question, then say what you will do next. Say it out loud first. (You can start with: "I wish I could —")
