Answering a Tough Question in a Live Q and A
Today's task: Answer one hard question in front of sixty listeners — say what is true, say what is not, and leave the room with one action you can keep tomorrow.
The Setup
Where
An audio question and answer room, on launch day. It is eight in the evening on your side. You are at your desk in the study with a headset on, and the question queue is open on your screen. One question has already been pushed to the top.
Who
You build the tool on your own and also make videos about it. Ruben is a well-known member of an overseas developer community: he maintains a popular open-source project, and many people read his posts before they try a new tool. He is not a user. He is in the room tonight because the launch was posted there.
At stake
A third of the first paying users came from this room tonight, and the recording will be read by people who were not here. If you only explain, or only apologize, the room will decide that the free limit was a trick.
Mood
Calm. Ruben speaks slowly, uses polite words, and never goes after you as a person. In the text chat beside him, the count of listeners keeps going up while he talks.
Scene Hint
Dialogue

You
Ruben, the floor is yours. I would rather hear it from you than read it back from a summary.
-
Ruben
Thanks. Here it is. The free plan lets you export three files a week, and export is the whole point of your tool. Your page says it is to prevent abuse. To me, it looks like the free plan is built to push people into paying.
-
You
Point taken. We never explain that limit on the page. It says to prevent abuse, and then it stops, so everything you just said is a fair reading of it. And that wording is mine.
-
Ruben
So which is it? Is the number a real cost, or a number that makes the upgrade look good?
-
You
That export costs me real money every time it runs, so a free limit is by design. It is not a sales trick. But the number itself, three a week, that was a guess. I never checked it against what people actually do.
-
Ruben
Then the guess is the problem. Someone in the chat hit that wall last week in the middle of a job. He is not the only one typing. If the number is a guess, why is it still on your page tonight?
-
You
Because I never went back to it. That is a true answer, not a good one. Can I narrow it down first? I want the real case — which export, how big the file, what day. One real case is worth more to me tonight than thirty people saying the same thing.
-
Ruben
Then here is one. He was cutting a ten-minute video last Wednesday, exported four times, and the fourth one was blocked. He paid the next day. He says he did not mind paying. He minded being stopped at the last step.
-
You
That is exactly the case I needed. One thing I will push back on, though: it is not bait. The limit is on the page before you start. Nobody gets walked to the last step and then surprised. But being stopped in the middle of a job — that one lands on me.
-
Ruben
Okay. I can take that. So what happens now? People want a number tonight, and I am one of them.
-
You
I am not going to promise a number tonight. A number I invent live would be worse than the one on the page. So, two things. The export cost goes on the page tomorrow, in plain words. And you, Ruben — can I take the case offline with him? I do not want to settle his account in front of sixty people.
-
Ruben
That is fair. And for what it is worth, I will put your answer back in the thread, so people can see it was answered here and not dodged. Come back next month and tell us the number.
point taken /pɔɪnt ˈteɪkən/
它比 you are right 稳——后者容易变成全面认输;也不等于 I agree。常搭:point taken on the wording / on the timeline。
Point taken on the deadline — I moved it without asking you first. What I want to talk about is the extra charge."(交期那一点我认——我没先问你就改了。
by design /baɪ dɪˈzaɪn/
说的时候通常跟在系动词后面:it is by design / that was by design。
The missing bulk delete is by design — one accidental tap used to wipe a whole folder for us."(没有批量删除是有意为之——我们这边曾因为一次误点清空了一整个文件夹。
take it offline /teɪk ɪt ˈɔːflaɪn/
说的时候最好接一个交付物:take it offline and come back with the wording;只说不接,听起来就是拖。
That one needs your account details, so let me take it offline and answer in the ticket by tomorrow."(这个要看你的账户信息,我把它挪到工单里,明天之前回你。
narrow it down /ˈnæroʊ ɪt daʊn/
Can we narrow it down to people who have shipped something on their own?"(我们能不能收窄到"独立上线过东西"的人?——换到筛简历,把一句模糊的要求变成一个能筛的条件。)
push back /pʊʃ bæk/
(I will push back on one thing),听起来像讨论,而不是反击。
I have to push back on the timeline — four weeks means shipping a version nobody has tested."(交期这一点我得提异议——四周意味着上线一个没人测过的版本。
My Turn
Situation: Same room, same night. Before the room moves on to the next person, Ruben asks one more thing — this time it is about you, not the pricing page.
They say: "One more thing. You build this alone. If you get sick, or take a month off, does the tool just stop? Why should anyone pay monthly for that?"
Your turn: Answer him without promising something you cannot deliver. Say what is true, then give one action you can keep this week. Say it out loud first. (You can start with: "Point taken —")
