The Smallest Version of the Favor

Ask for a favor and shrink it

Today's task: In a fifteen-minute call, ask Noor — who put your tool in front of her community two years ago — to help you reach a company that has never answered your emails. Then make the ask as small as you can.

The Setup

Where

A fifteen-minute video call on a Sunday afternoon. You are at home with a cold cup of tea pushed to the side of the desk; in Toronto it is just getting dark, and behind her you can see her desk and a row of event posters on the wall. On your screen is the third email you sent to that company, still without a reply.

Who

You are Sam, and you build Echonote alone. Noor is in Toronto, and she runs a small online demo night where people show design and note-taking tools for five minutes. Two years ago, when your tool had twenty users, she asked you to speak there. She is not your partner and not your investor, and you have not spoken since that night.

At stake

Half of your first users came out of that demo night. Now you want your tool to sit inside the meeting flow of a company that makes meeting notes, and you have written to their product lead three times with nothing back. One forward from Noor is the only path to him that does not depend on luck. Her event is next week, so her time is thin — and you do not want to be the person who only shows up when he needs something.

Mood

She picks up warm and mentions a line you said at that demo night two years ago. She does not do small talk around a request — she asks straight questions. Before you finish, she offers to write a full introduction for you herself. She is not taking over; connecting people is simply what she does.

Scene Hint

Dialogue

  1. Noor

Sam! Two years. I still use your line about the tool that does one thing — I have borrowed it twice at my own events. So, what do you need? You did not call me just to say hello.

    Sam!

  2. You

You are right, I did not. First, thank you for that night — half of my first users came out of it, and I never told you that. And I will be up front: I am calling because I need something, and I did not want to spend ten minutes pretending otherwise.

  3. Noor

Good. I hate the other kind of call. Who is it about?

  4. You

A company that makes meeting notes. I want my tool to sit inside their meeting flow, so I have to reach their product lead. I sent him three emails over five weeks and got nothing back. Not a no — nothing.

  5. Noor

I know him. He came to my night in the spring and he still owes me a speaker. Send me something and I will make an introduction for you, and I will put in a good word for you while I am at it. He reads my emails.

  6. You

That is generous, and the second half is the part I want to take off your plate. Please do not put in a good word for me. You knew me when my tool had twenty users. I am not that product now, and if I am not good enough for him, I do not want your name on it.

  7. Noor

Okay. Then what is the ask? Say it plainly, I have a call in twenty minutes.

  8. You

The small version. I do not need a real introduction from you — I need you to pass it along. I write two lines, you send them to him. Or you write one line of your own and put mine under it. If he never answers, that is between him and me, not you.

  9. Noor

That is very small. I can do more than forward an email, Sam. A real introduction works better — he answers me.

  10. You

I know, and I am turning down the bigger one on purpose. If you make an introduction, you are standing behind me, and I have not earned that yet. If you forward two lines, you are promising nothing — and that is exactly why it will actually happen next week. Everything on my end is ready: two lines, one link, and one thing he would care about.

  11. Noor

Fine, I will forward it. One honest question before I do: if he says yes, can you keep this alive? I see him at events. I do not want to send him something that dies in two months.

  12. You

Fair. I will send three things with the two lines: who uses it today, what the first version would take, and how many hours a week I can put in. If any of those numbers looks weak to you, delete it. I will not follow up — if he writes back, I will hear from him.

make an introduction /meɪk ən ˌɪntrəˈdʌkʃən/

记忆提示:搭配用 make,不用 do:make an introduction。名词是 introduction,动词是 introduce A to B。口语里常缩成 an intro(不正式,但很常用)。

Ask her to make an introduction before the conference starts — after that she will be too busy to answer anyone."(趁着会议还没开始请她帮你引荐一下;一开场她就没空回任何人了。)

put in a good word /pʊt ɪn ə ɡʊd ˈwɜːrd/

记忆提示:固定搭配 put in a good word for someone,中间不加别的东西。反过来的 put in a bad word 存在,但日常几乎没人用。

Do not put in a good word for me before the review — I would rather they judge the work on the day."(评审之前别替我说好话,我宁愿他们当天看东西本身。)

pass it along /pæs ɪt əˈlɔːŋ/

记忆提示:中间夹 it,也可以说 pass this along 或 pass it on。

The checklist is free — pass it along to anyone on your team who is starting out."(那份清单是免费的,团队里刚上手的人都可以转给他们。)

up front 复习 /ˌʌp ˈfrʌnt/

记忆提示:位置灵活:be up front about something / I will be up front。用 up,不用 on 或 in。

I will be up front about the timeline: nothing ships before March, so do not plan around us."(时间表我直说:三月之前不会上线,别把计划压在我们身上。)

on my end 复习 /ɑːn maɪ ˈend/

记忆提示:固定用 on,不用 at 或 in。对方那边是 on your end。常用搭配 nothing on my end(我这边没有变化)。

The contract is signed on my end; the only thing left is your countersignature."(合同我这边已经签好,只剩你回签。)

I will be up front: ___ , because ___ . 我直接说:___,因为___。
I do not need you to ___ . I need you to ___ .
Everything on my end is ready: ___ , ___ , and ___ .

My Turn

Situation: Same call, a few minutes later. She has said she will forward it. Then she asks one more thing — about the man who never wrote back.

They say: "One honest question before I send it. Why did he not reply the first three times? If there is something I should know, tell me now — I am the one who sees him at events."

Your turn: Answer her. Two or three sentences.
